Hollow spheres of fried dough stuffed with potato and chickpeas, and dipped in a brown-green water of tamarind and spices..... The vendor/bhaiya hands you an empty plate, pokes a hole in a sphere, shoves in stuffing with his finger, plunges the sphere into a giant vat of spiced liquid, and then places it on your waiting plate...... You grab it and pop it into your mouth whole, before the water melts through the dough.... Tempting haan I know it is coz i had one and a half plate today...When you bite, the gol gappa explodes..... There’s far more liquid than you’d ever imagine the little sphere could contain; it overwhelms your tastebuds and fills your mouth and yummm....just felt like one in my mouth while writing ;) ....I am writing about puchkas coz i had puchka in a non puchka city where i m currently putting up ChEnNaI and i tried to figure out how much they earn by talking to them and doing some simple maths so thought of sharing with you ol...I asked bhaiya(he was from UP) few questions and ans were as follows :
Rent for the place/token to police for helping the society -- Rs 5000 pm
Rent of place where he lives (8 of them together - 5000) -- Rs 625 per head pm
Taking transportation and other expenditure -- Rs 3000 pm
Cost of product would be 30% of selling price (despite of inflation)
He charges Rs 20 for 6 piece (ya ya i kno very expensive that is why they have came all the way from native place in UP to chennai)
Considering my vague assumptions they should earn min Rs10,000 a month....not bad haan!! but seriously telling you these guys are awesome they know how to talk to there customers and making them feel like king's HARWARD --- THIS IS A CASE STUDY FOR YOU!!!
but there are lot of things i want to know about this industry.....wat about organised market and ol where do they stand and what can we do to improve this industry, by improving i mean reducing the cost and improving hygiene for betterment of the society :) :).... c how much i think about ol of us :)
Yes i know you will still like that sweaty skin, unfiltered water and with garnishing of dust rather than vendor with gloves and filtered water. I am with you ol cheers to puchkas....
P.S. Don't forget to take one free Papdi(sukha wid nimbu) or Tamarind water ;)
